Sustainability

Sustainability is a guiding principle for Flora Prisma. Below are some of our early efforts to build a more thoughtful, sustainable brand. We believe in progress over perfection, and that the work is never finished. We look forward to continuing to innovate, improve and lighten our footprint.

01.

Sustainability has been a consideration since the earliest stages of Flora Prisma. The materials we use, the way we produce, and the scale at which we operate are all shaped by a desire to make thoughtful, lasting garments.

With each piece we create, we see an opportunity to make something better for you and for the planet. Sustainability is a journey; our goal is to responsibly grow Flora Prisma while keeping this progress at its heart.

02.

Flora Prisma prioritizes natural fibers over petroleum-based synthetic fabrics. We’re drawn to natural fibers for their beauty, comfort, and the way they wear in over time, extending a garment’s life cycle.

Natural fibers do not shed microplastics and allow for the beautiful uptake of botanical dyes. Edit 01 is made from 100% silk, sometimes referred to as mulberry silk. Flora Prisma plans to expand into plant-based natural fibers such as organic cotton and linen in future collections.

03.

Much of Flora Prisma’s first collection uses natural dyes. This process relies on plant-based materials and produces nuanced, living color that reflects the specific conditions of the fiber and dye process.

“Golden Hour” is created with yellow onion skins donated by farmers at local markets, along with kitchen scraps from family and friends of Flora Prisma. “Daybreak” is created with oak galls, and part of the process uses recycled mordant from the creation of Golden Hour, reducing raw material use as well as water and heat energy.

Each piece is made to be worn often and kept over time. Rather than following seasonal trends, we focus on timeless silhouettes, versatile details that allow for a range of styling options, and materials that age beautifully with use.

Our goal is to create garments that remain relevant in a wardrobe over many years.

05.

Flora Prisma works in one-of-a-kind hand-dyed and small-batch production. Limited runs reduce raw material waste and overproduction while supporting closer attention to quality at every stage.

All garments are produced in Northern California. Keeping production close allows for more direct oversight of quality and a more transparent production process, while reducing transportation distances and supporting local industry.

These close relationships also allow us to recover fabric scraps generated during the cutting process for reuse.

It’s a slower approach, but one that prioritizes care over scale.

06.

We use recycled, recyclable, and compostable packaging wherever possible. Instead of conventional plastic polybags, our inner packaging is primarily made from seaweed-based materials that are both home and commercially compostable.

The raw-edge ribbon used to wrap each piece is made from the same 100% silk as Edit 01, cut from fabric scraps generated during production.

This approach reduces reliance on petroleum-based plastics and helps keep packaging out of landfills. Our goal is to use as little plastic as possible from start to finish; making intentional choices about packaging is one of the ways we work toward that goal.

07.

Flora Prisma has just launched, and we hope our pieces will be worn and kept in your wardrobe for many years. When the time comes to part with them, we encourage keeping garments in circulation through resale and donation.

We are developing our own take-back program to help ensure Flora Prisma garments do not end up in landfills. More to come soon.
